**Dear fleet,**
Last Friday we woke up to sad news. 14 of our 16 Solings had burned overnight. The fire tore through the pines, and the boats beneath them went with it. We're heartbroken â this changes a lot for our activity for the rest of this year and the ones to come. That said, we'll keep crossing paths with all of you at international championships. A big hug to everyone.
Below is a translation of the article covering what happened, for those of you who want the fuller picture.

**Real Club NĂĄutico de Madrid survives the worst fire in its history**
The fire ravaging San MartĂn de Valdeiglesias and the San Juan Reservoir has caused major material damage to Real Club NĂĄutico de Madrid, where the club is based â though there have been no personal injuries.
The San Juan Reservoir, the usual setting for regattas, training sessions and sailing days, was blanketed by an immense column of smoke that turned the sky orange. In the foreground, the club's pontoons and masts stood still as the fire advanced through the pine forests of San MartĂn de Valdeiglesias and Pelayos de la Presa.
The fire, one of the most severe seen in recent years in Madrid's Sierra Oeste, hit the club hard â though the most important news is that no one was hurt.
"The first thing is that we haven't had any personal tragedy, and that's what matters most," club president Tobi Carrasco told Tripulante18, still shaken by what happened.
The material damage, however, is significant. The flames destroyed the shed where numerous Soling-class boats were stored, and also affected the esplanade and various auxiliary facilities.
"It's done a lot of material damage. The shed where the Snipes were kept has been almost ninety percent destroyed, and we've also lost the whole terrace above the tavern. It's a very hard blow, but we're going to bounce back. With the help of all our members, I'm convinced that in less than a year we'll be shining like before â or even brighter," Carrasco says.
Paradoxically, the social heart of the club survived the flames. The restaurant, the changing rooms, the race office, the sailing school dormitories and the sail loft all remain intact, even though the fire came within meters.
"The boatyard was burned to ash, but right next to it was the sail loft with all the boats' sails, and it wasn't damaged at all. There were areas where the fire passed right by the buildings," he explains.
Real Club NĂĄutico de Madrid occupies a privileged spot right in the heart of the San Juan Reservoir. Surrounded by extensive pine forests, it has always boasted an exceptional natural setting â one that has now also become its greatest vulnerability.
"The club sits in the middle of the pine forest. It's an idyllic place to sail, but when a fire of this scale hits, the situation becomes extremely delicate," the president acknowledges. Fortunately, he adds, the fire moved mainly through low vegetation and pine needles, without catching heavily in the treetops.
**Many boats damaged**
Beyond the buildings, the club's real concern lies on the sporting side. Real Club NĂĄutico de Madrid is a national and international reference point for the Soling class, and each season it hosted some of the most important events on the European calendar. Numerous cruisers and light sailing boats, including Snipes and Optimists, were also lost.
"Our biggest loss isn't the facilities, it's the boats. We're a racing club that runs more than ninety events a year. Losing much of the Soling fleet is an enormous blow to the continuity of our activity," the club president laments.
The Madrid club had the largest concentration of Solings in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, which had allowed it to draw sailors from many countries.
"This year we had planned to hold another international championship, with crews from all over Europe, plus the United States and Brazil. Obviously we won't be able to hold it now. Rebuilding that fleet will take time, because it's not easy to find available boats," he explains.
Reconstruction will be slow. Many of those Solings are hard-to-replace boats, and they'll need to be sourced from different European countries before the club regains the sporting strength it had built up over decades.
**Reconstruction starting Tuesday**
While the fire remains active in parts of the area, access to the club is still very difficult. The priority now is to assess the damage and begin reconstruction as soon as possible.
"On Tuesday we'll have our first meeting with the loss adjusters and insurance companies. We need to photograph everything, take inventory of what's been destroyed, and get to work. With the help of insurance and all our members, we'll roll up our sleeves and start rebuilding the club, little by little," Carrasco concludes.
Real Club NĂĄutico de Madrid has survived the worst fire in its history. The facilities can be repaired, and the boats will slowly return to fill the boatyard once more. What no one wants to lose is the spirit of a club that, for more than six decades, has made the San Juan Reservoir the great home of Madrid sailing.
